You are right that there are shades of gray in many of these words. I see what you are saying about 'stopping or no longer believing' and in that way it is different from 'know'. I would still probably consider it a state though because the key here is that you can not pinpoint a clear beginning and end to the condition. I consider it like the verb 'love'. You can stop loving someone but once again, can you point out a definite beginning and end to the love. The boundaries in these verbs are just fuzzy or at times non-existent which is why they are considered states.

I don't know if I would use them inerchangeably because to me if you believe something to be true doesn't necessarily make it true. if you know something to be true, on the other hand, you are putting a truth-value on it that committs it to be true. Does that make sense?

And I agree with Karen, that you can stop believing something but you can't stop knowing. Well, unless you develop Aphasia or Dementia or something of the like where you lose memories or knowledge of everyday things, you wont stop knowing something and its properties.
