I've been in situations like that before. I agree with you about the disprefered second and flauting the maxim quality. However, i think this also deals with the concept we discussed in class of preference organization where your second is more complex than just simply saying "yes" or "no." You felt you needed to come up with an excuse for refusing her invitation so you made your response more lengthy and complex than just saying "no." Also, wouldn't this kinda be an adjacency pair because she asked you a question which required a response of acceptance or refusal? What do you think?
